6 Types of Relationships You’ll Have in Your Twenties

No one ever tells us that not all relationships are made equal. Most of us strive for that fairytale ending, only to be left with more questions than answers when our happily-ever-after eludes us.

Even though you’re always told that you’ll have to kiss a lot of frogs before you find the one, facing disappointment after disappointment understandably leaves a bitter taste in your mouth.

For some reason, even though there’s so much going on in this day and age, meeting someone who has their life together is a lot harder than it sounds.

Once you hit your twenties, you’ll fall in (and out of) love with guys who deserve your time and others who don’t. These are just some of the relationships that all 20-somethings will experience.

1. The Stage Five Clinger

Even though you’ve only been dating your guy for a few weeks, he calls and texts you every day. When you tell him that you’re having a girls’ night out on the town and that you’ll see each other later, he sees this as his chance to “surprise” you by crashing your party—much to the dismay of your friends. While this may seem really sweet at first, the real problem lies in the fact that he gets ridiculously jealous about how you spend your time away from him.

If you don’t answer right away or promise to call him back later, he instantly doubts how sincere you’re being. We’ve all been so caught up in the honeymoon phase that we take the obsessive phone calls and texts as proof that our partner actually cares. Here’s the truth. You can date someone for five days or five months, but if there isn’t any trust between you, the relationship was already over before it really began.

2. The Possessive, Jealous Type

Most couples believe that being in a relationship means exclusivity is a given. But there are certain aspects of some relationships that Hollywood movies tend to romanticize and are actually super toxic in nature.

For instance, although you’ve been seeing each other for a few years and have met each other’s friends and families on multiple occasions, you both can’t help it when jealousy rears its ugly head.

Despite what those rom-coms tell you, there is nothing attractive about having a partner who is extremely possessive and cannot handle seeing you hang out with anyone else but him. This definitely goes both ways.

3. The Friend with Benefits

You’re in your twenties, which means that you have your moments where you’re just not looking for anything serious. You just got out of a relationship and are in no hurry to jump into another one.

4. The Best Friend

Whether you started off as friends with benefits or were strictly platonic before becoming a couple , dating your best friend can have its ups and downs. One of the many perks is that you already know each other’s likes and dislikes really well, and have a strong bond that no one can come in between. Sometimes, it feels like he knows you better than you know yourself.

But even though there is no one else who means more to you, being in a relationship with your best friend puts a block on your friendship. The key to making things work is remembering that although you’re dating now, your friendship is just as important as your relationship. Do everything you can to protect it.

5. The Drifter

You could’ve sworn that you were both on the same page about where things were going, but things just didn’t work out that way. The same guy who you couldn’t imagine going a full day or hour without calling suddenly stops answering your texts and phone calls.

Things are weird between you and he’s putting in zero effort to make things work. It doesn’t matter if you’ve been together since junior high school or only recently started dating; instead of breaking up face-to-face, he just ghosts you without an explanation.

You love him, but you couldn’t feel further apart.

6. The “One”

You’ll know it when you see it. Right when you’re ready to throw in the towel, he comes in. You’ve been through so many bad relationships that trusting someone else doesn’t come easily to you anymore.

However, the more you get to know each other, the more it feels like you’ve finally found the real deal. Being with this person makes all the struggles you’ve dealt with up until this very moment more than worth it. You’ve never believed in the idea of soulmates, but you’d be willing to bet that life—and love—doesn’t get any better than this.

Sometimes, you have to make a lot of wrong turns before you can find the one person who is the real deal. Although it may not feel like it when you’re caught in the heat of the moment, the payoff will be that much sweeter—unless you’re one of the lucky ones who found real love on your first try.
