Dating, at any age, is never easy—despite what the movies and romance novels may portray. It can be exhausting, and yet extremely exciting at the same time. If you’re anything like me, you may have a list of qualities you’re searching long and hard for, ranging from age all the way through to extramural activities.
After all, you don’t want to date anyone who’s the complete opposite of you. Sure, in some aspects that’s necessary, as you do need diversity, but there are certain qualities that both parties need to possess in order to create a long-lasting, successful relationship that won’t end in irreconcilable differences.
If you’re on the lookout for Mister Right, though, here’re the qualities and attributes that I think you should keep an eye out for:
1. Religious similarities
Regardless of the religion you practice, whether you’re Muslim; Christian; Buddhist; Jewish; spiritual; atheist or even a little bit of everything, it’s important to move in the same direction as your partner—especially if you plan on adding children to the picture.
If not, this can create plenty of unnecessary confusion for children and conflict between spouses, ultimately separating the family, which is the last thing you want. Besides, nothing brings a couple closer together than following the same belief system.
2. Manners
You want to be able to take your man anywhere, whether it’s to a restaurant or to meet your family for the first time. You definitely don’t want to be embarrassed by him, especially if you’re very manner-conscious.
In that case, it’s best to find someone who possesses the basics when it comes to proper manners like saying please and thank you or opening the door for you if you so wish.
3. Cleanliness
You can tell a lot about a man by how clean his nails are regardless of his profession. Men who take care of themselves take care of their nails. I’m by no means saying that you should find someone who goes for regular manicures and facials, grooming himself more than you groom yourself. I am, however, saying that you should find someone who cares about washing his hands before touching your face.
4. Financial stability
If you’re a woman who takes care of your own bills, then you need a man who going to take care of his own and not see you as a free ride. Sure, we all go through bad patches financially, and there’s nothing wrong with that. However, if he’s not willing to try, depending on you to bring home the bacon instead, then you need to move on. Don’t be a gold digger, but find someone with the same financial goals as you.
5. Confidence
Confidence is key is what they always say. However, that’s not far from the truth. Having confidence gives him a sense of sexiness. You want someone who’s going to lead at times, have enough confidence to stand up to you and put you in your place when you’ve done wrong and be able to ravish you when you expect it less. So, keep an eye out for a man with confidence, but don’t confuse that with cockiness—there’s a huge difference between the two!
6. Respect
Respect isn’t something that happens overnight, and he needs to understand it. When trying to find your perfect match, look for someone who respects your choices.
Someone who listens when you say no, and who respects your alone time. If not, that’s a huge red flag of who he may turn out to be. Always trust your instincts when you fear something may be off. The hints may be subtle, but they’re always there. You deserve to be respected.
7. Friendliness
Honestly, no one wants to spend time with someone who’s grumpy and never smiles. As this may be on most women’s checklist, it’s definitely a good one to have. Find someone with whom you can be serious and can make you laugh. After all, life can be downright awful at times, and you’re going to need someone who can bring out your lighter side without having to try too hard.
8. Family-oriented
If you’re looking to start a family, you want to spend your time with someone who’s family orientated. This can easily be seen in how much time he wants to spend time with the people he considers family, which may even include you. If family time is important to you, then you should find someone who has the same values.
9. Patience
As a woman, you’re familiar with the dreaded monthly dilemma moods and weird cravings. You’re going to want someone who’s willing to throw chocolates your way, from a distance, and have enough patience to deal with your moodiness. Patience is key when it comes to women—from certain decision-making skills to how fast we want to move in the relationship.
10. Ability to love
Most importantly, he needs to be able to love. It’s no use falling for someone who’s still hung up on his ex-girlfriend or who’s reached an age where he no longer feels the need to do a little bit of work in order to win you over. He needs to be able to woo you, and make you feel wanted. If not, it’s best to find someone else as he will only leave you heartbroken.
